my
series documents milwaukee’s mitchell park horticultural conservatory, or more
commonly known as the domes. donald grieb designed the domes in the mid 1950’s
to house three artificial environments: the tropical dome, the desert dome, and
the show dome, each sized at 750,000 cubic feet. the species of plants in the
domes are supported by heating systems, cooling systems, watering tanks, misting
mechanisms, imported wildlife and insects, and five full-time horticulturists. for
this series, i chose to focus not on the plants but rather the artificial
elements humans implemented in creating these naturalistic spaces.
